Performed variously as escapist fantasy, celebratory fiction, and political allegory, The Tempest is one of the plays in which William Shakespeare’s genius as a poetic dramatist found its fullest expression. This Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited with an introduction by Martin Butler.’How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,That has such people in’t!’A storm rages. Prospero, his daughter Miranda, and his monstrous servant Caliban watch from their desert island as a ship carrying the royal family is wrecked. Miraculously, all on board survive. Plotting, mistaken identities, bewitching love and drunkenness follow as the travellers explore the strange place of spirits and monsters on which they have landed. They soon begin to realize all is not as it seems, in a play whose magical setting and classical unity of time and place have inspired films as varied as Forbidden Planet, Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books, and Julie Taymor’s The Tempest, starring Helen Mirren as ‘Prospera’.This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare’s life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to The Tempest, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary

Caligula reveals some aspects of the existential notion of ‘the absurd’ by portraying an emperor so mighty and so desperate in his search for freedom that he inevitably destroys gods, men and himself. The dramatic impetus of Cross Purpose, however, comes from the tension between consent to and refusal of man’s absurdity; it is the tragedy of a man who returns home to his mother and sister without revealing his identity to them. By the time of The Just and The Possessed, refusal and rebellion have taken over, and in these overtly political plays (the latter based on Dostoyevsky’s The Devils) Camus dramatizes action and revolt in the name of liberty.Albert Camus was born in Algeria in 1913. His play, Caligula, appeared in 1939. His first two important books, L’Etranger (The Outsider) and the long essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe (The Myth of Sisyphus), were published when he returned to Paris. After the war he devoted himself to writing and established an international reputation with such books as La Peste (The Plague 1947), Les Justes (The Just 1949) and La Chute (The Fall; 1956). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. He was killed in a road accident in 1960.

A farcical comedy of mistaken identity and outrageous trickery, William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors is edited by Stanley Wells with an introduction by Randall Martin in Penguin Shakespeare. ‘We’ll leave a proof, by that which we will do, Wives may be merry, and yet honest too’ Two sets of identical twins – Dromio and Antipholus of Syracuse, and their brothers Dromio and Antipholus of Ephesus – having been separated at sea as children, find themselves in the same city for the first time as adults. Soon, their friends mistake the twins for one another and bewilderment abounds, as the wife of one man declares the other to be her husband, pronouncing him mad when he denies the claim. Exuberant, complex and brilliantly farcical, this is a hilarious comedy of confusion and ultimate reunion. This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare’s life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to The Comedy of Errors, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden some time in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love-poetry in English. Inexorably poisoned against the woman he loves by his trusted friend Iago, Shakespeare’s Othello is a timeless tragic figure. This Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited by Kenneth Muir with an introduction by Tom McAlindon. ‘O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on.’ A popular soldier and newly married man, Othello seems to be in an enviable position. And yet, when his supposed friend Iago sows doubts in his mind about his wife Desdemona’s fidelity, and his friend Cassio’s true intentions, he is gradually consumed by suspicion. When Ellie Dunn joins a house-party at the home of the eccentric Captain Shotover, she causes a stir with her decision to marry for money rather than love, and the Captain’s forthright daughter Hesione protests vigorously against the pragmatic young woman’s choice. Opinion on the matter quickly divides and a lively argument about money and morality, idealism and realism ensues as Hesione’s rakish husband, snobbish sister and Ellie’s fiance – a wealthy industrialist – enter the debate. Written between 1916 and 1917 as war raged across Europe, Heartbreak House is a telling indictment of the generation responsible for the First World War. With its bold combination of high farce and bitter tragedy, Shaw’s play remains an uncannily prophetic depiction of a society on the threshold of an abrupt awakening.

The stories of Exile and the Kingdom explore the dilemma of being an outsider – even in one’s own country – and of allegiance. With intense power and lyricism, Camus evokes beautiful but harsh landscapes, whether the shimmering deserts of his native Algeria or the wild, mysterious jungles of Brazil. Here a Frenchwoman is gradually seduced by the sheer difference of North Africa, a mutilated renegade is driven mad by the cruelty of his own people, and a barrel-maker watches the slow decline of his craft. A kindly teacher must choose between the law and a life, while a modest painter is out of his depth in the hypocrisy of the art world, and a French engineer discovers a new sense of belonging in a distant land.French novelist, essayist, and playwright. Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a representative of non-metropolitan French literature. His origin in Algeria and his experiences there in the thirties were dominating influences in his thought and work.Carol Cosman is the translator of many works from French, both literary and scholarly. Among the books she has translated are Jean-Paul Sartre’s “The Family Idiot: Gustave Flaubert, 1821-1857,” Honore de Balzac’s “Colonel Chabert,” Simone de Beauvoir’s “America Day by Day,” and most recently Rene Daumal’s “Mount Analogue”.
